A new documentary series MNA AN IRA –Dearcadh ar Leith begins on TG4 tonight – the first episode focuses on Rose Dugdale who was imprisoned for a botched bombing attempt in Strabane and the audacious art theft at RussBorough House in Co. Wicklow. Her husband Eddie Gallagher, had attempted to force her release from prison by kidnapping dutch industrialist Tiede Herrema.
Many Liveline listeners were upset about her comments on the John Murray show earlier in the day especially her lack of remorse for any of her crimes….. many more believed these documentaries should not be televised. We also spoke to Tiede Herrema who believes it was nothing personal towards him and that he has moved on in his life and what is important to him now is his children and grandchildren. Dermot says it would be stupid not to allow the IRA women on. They are historical characters and its important to hear what they have to say now while they are still alive rather than someone trying to interpret their message later. We can not deny that this is our history. We also had a call from Donal who told us that he had been interned in the North in 1971 and was released and eventually was interned in the Curragh. He was eventually jailed in Portlaoise.. He told us about several IRA missions he had been on. He says we need total peace in this small island of hours,. it is the only way to go forward.
