Programme 1: Nancy Wilson - 7th September 2006
The first artist featured on the series will be Nancy Wilson. Nancy began her jazz career at the tender age of fifteen, and since then has amassed several Grammy Awards, NAACP Image Awards, a star on the Hollywood walk of fame, streets named after her, honorary doctorate degrees - the list goes on!
She also had her own television show, her own radio show, was second only to the Beatles in record sales (outselling Sinatra, the Beach Boys and Nat King Cole), and was chosen by Barry Manilow to sing a song he composed for lyrics written by the late Johnny Mercer.
Despite all this, Nancy still finds time to team up with M.C.G. Jazz, a social enterprise supporting youth education programs in Pittsburgh.
Programme 2: McCoy Tyner & Ron Carter - 14th September 2006
In this second programme of the series, Melanie O'Reilly interviews two legends of the John Coltrane Quartet, McCoy Tyner, one of the most influential pianists of our times, and the peerless virtuoso Bassist, Ron Carter.
Programme 3: Mal Sharpe - 21st September 2006
In this episode of Jazz on the Bay, Melanie O'Reilly journeys across the San Francisco Bay by boat to meet Mal Sharpe, jazz trombonist, TV and radio personality , chatting about his music and his wacky life as the infamous "Man on the Street".
Programme 4: Kim Nally - 28th September 2006
Melanie O'Reilly journeys to North Beach, the legendary bohemian centre of San Francisco, where she chats to Kim Nally, singer, actress and owner of the top music venue, Jazz at Pearls.
Programme 5: Mark Murphy - 5th October 2006
Melanie travels to Downtown Oakland , California and meets Mark Murphy, one of the world's greatest -- and hippest -- jazz singers today. Discovered by Sammy Davis Jnr. he has had such vocal greats such as Betty Carter, Peggy Lee, Cleo Laine and Shirley Horn singing Murphy's praises as one of the best in the business and the legendary Ella Fitzgerald once declared 'he is my equal. ". Swinging, hip, "beat" vocalese , great chat and cool tunes."
Programme 6: Kurt Elling - 12th October 2006
Melanie O'Reilly travels to the Monterey Jazz Festival, California , to meet "musical phenomenon", and 6 time Grammy award nominee, singer/lyricist Kurt Elling, who is carrying on the mantle of Jon Hendricks, Mark Murphy and Betty Carter, incorporating vocalese with poetry and spoken word into his fresh vision of jazz.
