Into The Deep
Series will be repeated starting on Monday 27th August 2007 at 8pm.
Into the Deep is a science series, presented by Ella McSweeney, which gives listeners a window on marine biology and oceanography in Irish seas.
You don't have to fly to far-off exotic places in Australia or the Caribbean to look at coral reefs. Instead, just take a trip to Galway! We've got cold-water reefs off the coast from Sligo to Kerry, which have built up over thousands of years. They're our 'rainforests of the sea' because they are a haven for so many different marine species, such as snails, worms and scallop-like molluscs.
But just how big is the coral reef off Ireland's coast? What species of coral are living there, and how do they reproduce? In this programme, Ella travels to Galway to meet Ireland's coral obsessives Anthony Grehan and Janine Guinan, and talks to Jan Helge Fosse of Norway's Institute of Marine Science about how his country have protected their reefs for the future.
