ARLO GUTHRIE (Part 2): 25th September 2006

ARLO GUTHRIE (Part 1): 18th September 2006
Arlo Guthrie was born with a guitar in one hand and a harmonica in the other, in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York in 1947. He is the eldest son of America's most beloved singer/writer/philosopher Woody Guthrie. Arlo Guthrie's career exploded in 1967 with the release of "Alice's Restaurant", whose title song premiered at the Newport Folk Festival helped foster a new commitment among the '60s generation to social consciousness and activism. Arlo went on to star in the 1969 Hollywood film version of "Alice's Restaurant", directed by Arthur Penn.

With songs like "Alice's Restaurant", "Coming into Los Angeles", banned from many radio stations (but a favourite at the 1969 Woodstock Festival); and the definitive rendition of Steve Goodman's "City of New Orleans", Guthrie was no One-Hit-Wonder. An artist of international stature, he has never had a hit in the usual sense.

Over the last four decades Guthrie has toured throughout North America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia winning a wide, popular following. In addition to his accomplishments as a musician, playing the piano, six and twelve-string guitar, harmonica, Arlo is a natural-born storyteller, whose tales and anecdotes figure prominently in his performances.

He was joined on stage in Vicar Street by his son and grandson for a great night of music and stories

RAMBLING JACK ELLIOT: 28th August 2006
Recorded at Whelans in Dublin in May

He's spent years of travelling, telling stories and playing tunes for folks. Artists like Bob Dylan and Kris Kristofferson trace their influences back to the songs and stories of Ramblin' Jack.
Well, Jack sure was a hoot to see and hear at Whelans. He told about the time his road manager, Cesar helped drive him to a gig in Denver but he was sorta driving darn slow so Jack had to call in the show 'cause they were still only half past Wyoming when The Denver Show was supposed to start. But Cesar was just being cautious, figuring that the cops might not take too compassionate about speeding seeing it was a dog doing the driving... So Cesar was a good dog and He and Jack safely arrived at a phone booth not quite there yet to call in some stories and songs... Don't miss the chance to hear this legend tell it like it was in story and song.

KARINE POLWART: 21st August 2006
The very talented Karine Polwart scooped Best Album (Faultlines) , Best Original Song (The Sun's Comin' Over the Hill) and the Horizon Award at the 2005 Folk on 2 Awards.

TIM O'BRIEN: 14th August 2006
A singer of unusual clarity and originality, a self-taught multi-instrumentalist of rare ability, and an incisive songwriter, Tim O'Brien has, over the last 20 years, made a lasting mark on what some are calling Americana music through his innate musicianship and his wide-ranging tastes. Whether it's the reinterpretation of an old fiddle tune, a revitalized honky-tonk shuffle from the 1950s, or an original, bluegrass-inflected folk song, O'Brien's music feels familiar and comfortable while never lapsing into the predictable. He describes what he's been doing all these years more concisely: making something new out of something old.
Born in Wheeling, West Virginia, with a strong Irish background, Tim is a frequent visitor to Ireland and loves nothing better than exploring his Celtic roots in music. The concert was recorded by RTÉ in Whelan's Dublin in 2005.

DIANNE REEVES: 7th August 2006
Dianne Reeves is perhaps the pre-eminent jazz vocalist in the world today. Reeves was the first singer to ever perform at the Walt Disney Concert Hall and was appointed as the first Creative Chair for Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Recently Reeves appeared and performed in George Clooney's "Good Night, and Good Luck," the Academy Award nominated film that chronicles Edward R. Murrow's confrontation with Senator Joseph McCarthy.
