Dark Horses by Claire Keegan, the winning story from the Francis MacManus short story competition 2005.
This story is the winner of this year's Francis McManus short story competition. It is a dark tale of lost love and a man who brought it upon himself. It's set along the border.
Author Claire Keegan was born in 1968 and grew up on a farm in Wicklow, the youngest of a large family. At the age of seventeen she travelled to New Orleans and studied English and Political Science at Loyola University, returning to Ireland in 1992. She began writing in 1994. She has an MA in Creative Writing and taught undergraduates for a year at the University of Wales.
Her first collection of short stories, Antarctica, was finished in 1998 and she was awarded the Rooney Prize for Literature. At the moment she is working on a second collection of stories and a novel and is the writer in residence at University College Cork.
