Four Roads to Jerusalem

Four Roads to Jerusalem is a story of four women who travelled overland to Jerusalem at different times, told in the voice of the women themselves through their own notes and diaries. The journeys took place in the 4th, 15th, 18th and 19th century and although each woman is quite unique in her own way in the sense, they are all enthusiastic travellers.

The last woman in the series is the Princess Asmar, from Baghdad. She traveled with a huge caravan through the desert to Damascus and on to Jerusalem. She shared her tent with a bishop - with a curtain decorously hung between them. When she got to London, she scandalised people there by smoking a narghile, although she herself was scandalised by seeing men with their upper lips bare!
