Rebel City Reverts
A radio documentary about the Irish Muslim reverts and the Cork Muslim community.
A radio documentary about the Irish Muslim reverts and the Cork Muslim community.
Sunday 26th April 2009
On Friday 15 May, Cork city council hosted a civic reception for the Muslim community in the city. This year the Cork Muslim community celebrates the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the first Mosque in the city.
In Rebel City Reverts, three Cork born Muslims relate their experiences of finding Islam, practising their religion in their home town, and worshipping at their Mosque, on an industrial estate on the outskirts of Cork City.
There are more than 5,000 Muslims living in Cork. Most come from overseas and members of the Muslim community in Cork are drawn from dozens of countries across the Muslim world, from Morocco to Indonesia and beyond.
People who are not born Muslim are known as reverts, rather than converts, the implication being they 'revert' to a truer faith.
