John Gibney is originally from Kilbarrack in north Dublin and earned a doctorate in history at Trinity College Dublin. He has taught Irish history at Trinity College and UCD, has been a research fellow at the University of Notre Dame, the Huntington Library in California and NUI Galway, and has worked in heritage tourism in Dublin since 2001.
He was a contributor to the Royal Irish Academy's Dictionary of Irish Biography, has written widely on seventeenth century Irish history, and is the author of Ireland and the Popish Plot (Palgrave). His second book, The shadow of a year: the 1641 rebellion in Irish history and memory, will be published in January 2013 by University of Wisconsin Press. A biography of the Irish republican and 1916 leader Sean Heuston will follow from O'Brien Press in March 2013.
The Animal Gangs is his first radio documentary.
