A passion for music; enduring friendships; first loves and marriages; great pieces of music; inspiring conductors; brilliant administrators; hard work and hard play..
As the National Youth Orchestra prepares to bring together past-members of the orchestra to celebrate its 40th anniversary, Evelyn Grant catches up with some of the people who played in each decade of the orchestra's history.
Over 2,500 young people people have been through the orchestra since it began as the Irish Youth Orchestra on 17th July 1970. This is a date that Evelyn remembers well, when as a young flute player with the new orchestra, she put her eye on cellist Gerard Kelly - who she later married.
Produced by Evelyn Grant.
Production Supervision by Liam O'Brien.
First broadcast Saturday 16th October 2010
