A Christian brother walks out of monastic catholic life in Sydney, Australia one evening without a word to anyone, leaving behind him 25 years of religious service... and a pot burning on the stove. Why?
What drove Brother Benedict from religious life after so many years? What called him to that life in the first place? And what happened his life after he left the Christian Brothers?
This is a story familiar to many Irish families particularly given our past when it was a family's honour to have a son, daughter, brother or sister give their life to the Catholic vocation. However, life is not always that simple or straightforward, especially not for those who made the sarcrifice of entering the monastic way of life.
Australian writer Linda Neil tries to solve the mystery of Brother Benedict whilst also telling the story of a daughter's search for her father and the legacy he left her.
The Long Walk of Brother Benedict was written by Linda Neil, and co-produced by Sharon Davis and Linda Neil with technical production by Phillip Ulman. It was first broadcast in Australia as part of the 360documentaries series on ABC Radio National.
First broadcast on RTÉ Radio 1 Saturday 23rd April, 2011
