Martin McKenna's career began in a hay barn in Limerick and ended up with three best-selling books about dog behaviour in Australia - he could not read or write but he would become known as 'The Dogman'.
Hidden away near a bridge, about two miles outside Limerick is a hay barn where for a period Martin McKenna as a runaway child lived with a pack of stray dogs.
McKenna had grown up in Garryowen but ran away from home because he was looking for trouble. Although he struggled at times for food and warmth he preferred the hay barn. He liked the streets. He learned a lot about man’s best friend during that time of his life.
Many years later - Martin, after travels that took him all over Europe and Asia, arrived in Australia. He could not read or write but he would become known as the Dogman.
“Dogman” tells the story of how Martin McKenna’s career began in a hay barn in Limerick and ended up with three best selling books about dog behaviour in Australia.
Produced by Ciaran Cassidy. Narrated by Eamon Owens. 'Dogman' was funded by the BAI Sound and Vision fund.
