When you book into a hotel, do you ever think about what goes on behind the scenes? This is the story of a day in the life of one Irish hotel - the Central Hotel in Dublin - now in its 125th year.
When you book into a hotel, do you ever think about the work and organisation that went on behind your having fresh sheets and towels, hot water and heating and all the other creature comforts? A hotel becomes your home away from home, but you barely glimpse the people who are there to make your stay problem-free.
This is a documentary about the Central Hotel in Dublin – a much-loved venue that is one of the longest established hotels in Dublin. 2012 is its 125th year in business.
The documentary follows the working lives and the stories of the people in the background who provide the services and the maintenance that makes a hotel stay what it should be: pleasant and uncomplicated.
There is a daily routine carried out at a level of almost military precision and there is a core team – such people as Myles, Isobel, Eddie, Brendan and Elaine – who keep the hotel running like clockwork.
From dawn to dusk and through again to dawn there is a support team working for the benefit and comfort of the hotel guests. This is a look behind the scenes with the team as they cater for visitors to the hotel rooms, the famous Library Bar and the many function rooms that host meetings of all kinds of groups from sci-fi fans to knitting clubs.
They deal with the difficult and pleasant guests from all over the world. They deal with the challenges of an ageing building. And what other hotel could boast having Daniel O'Donnell and Paul Simon as part of its story?
Produced by Martin Duffy.
