As Ireland descends into 'Obama mania' ahead of an Irish visit by the 44th President of the United States, Fergal Keane looks back at the meteoric campaign year that got Barrack Obama there - 2008.
A journey through the US Presidential election, with Fergal Keane.
Throughout 2008 RTE's Fergal Keane reported from the US on the Presidential Election for Drivetime.
From the early primaries, through Super Tuesday, and both the Republican and Democratic conventions, he was on the campaign trail with both Barack Obama and John McCain and Hillary Clinton.
Now just three weeks before President Obama is due to visit Ireland, this is Fergal's account of this historic election from all the key moments throughout the year.
This programme recounts Obama's first emergence as a real Democratic contender and the growing knowledge that the pre election favourite Hillary Clinton was going to be defeated. There are early rallies with John McCain and Sarah Palin's dramatic first appearance at the Republican convention in St Paul's.
Along the way, Fergal meets politicians of all political colours and ordinary Americans, caught up in an extraordinary charged election campaign which changed American and world politics.
The climax comes from an emotion charged night in Chicago's Grant Park when Barack Obama is finally elected.
Produced and presented by Fergal Keane.
