Rosie Guihen left Tarmon in Co Leitrim for Manchester in 1946. Her sister Teresa followed her two years later. 'The Things We Remember' tells their story.
Both sisters remained in Manchester, married and brought up their families there. Over the last few years Rosie has developed Alzheimers and Vascular Dementia. Her once formidable memory has deserted her.
This documentary is about a remembered world, the world the two sisters left, on the shores of Lough Allen. It tells of the effect of emigration on one family and how those effects continue into the next generation.
Rosie remembers the vivid memory of her younger sister Teresa and the memories of Rosie's daughters - how memory is passed on. How it haunts. How it survives in remnants - as smell and sound and taste are evoked. How nothing ever really goes away.
The Things We Remember is narrated by Vincent Woods, Poet, Playwright and Presenter of the Arts Show on Radio One. Rosie and Teresa Guihen are his aunts.
This documentary was funded through the BCI Sound and Vision funding Scheme.
