Programme 14: Saturday 26th December 2009

Tonight's Céilí House features a gala concert with the Kilfenora Céilí Band recorded during the St. Patrick's Festival at the National Concert Hall, Dublin in March this year.

Programme 13: Saturday 19th December 2009

The Kilfenora Céilí Band celebrated their centenary during 2009 and on tonight's Céilí House we feature music and interviews with members of the band past and present. There are recordings from the 1950's, the 1970's and from the north Clare town's celebrations in April of this year.

Saturday 12th December 2009: Lashings of Music

To mark the occasion of the issuing by RTÉ of The Gold Ring, a double CD of archive recordings of the great Co. Clare uilleann piper, Willie Clancy, we rebroadcast a documentary programme on his life and times with contributions from friends, fellow musicians and people who knew him.

Tonight's Céilí House comes from Castleblakeney, Co. Galway. There's music and song from a host of local performers and Valerie Kinsella talks about the history of the area and the Castleblakeney Heritage Centre where the programme was recorded.

The All-Ireland senior céilí band champions, The Dartry Céilí Band, are the guests on tonight's Céilí House. The programme was recorded at the Róisin Dubh pub in Gurteen, Co. Sligo.

Tonight's Céilí House celebrates 30 years of the Cork Folk Festival with the Rebel Céilí Band, Con Fada Ó Drisceoil and many more and was recorded during this year's Festival in Murphy's Brewery in Cork city in September.

The second of two programmes from the All-Ireland Senior Céilí Band competition at the Fleadh in Tullamore last August. There'll be a new name on the trophy this year as the current champions, the Inisfree Céilí Band will not be taking part.

On tonight's Céilí House we feature some of the finest young exponents of Irish traditional music and song, all teenagers. They were recorded at the end of Scoil Éigse at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Tullamore in August. Among these outsanding performers are Lotte Cullen on uilleann pipes, Cillian Donaghy on banjo, Etaoin Rowe sings her winning ballad, Sadhbh Peat on concertina, Marie Barry on tin whistle and Dylan Folan on fiddle.

Programme 8: Saturday 15th August 2009

Tonight in the final programme in the current series, Céilí House The Archives, features performances from, among others, the Sean Ryan Quartet, Brendan McGlinchey, Máirin Uí Chéide and Maeve Donnelly.

Programme 7: Saturday 8th August 2009

Tonight's programme features a session from Doolin, Co. Clare in 1959 with Leo Rowsome, Seamus Ennis, Martín Byrnes and Sean Mac Dhonnchadha. The Stretford Road Hotel in Manchester was the venue for a recording session by Ciaran McMathuna in 1963 and features, among others, mouth organ player, Michael Conroy, and piper, Felix Doran. From a concert in Ennis in 1962, we will hear the Kilfenora Céilí Band, Paddy Canny, Peter O'Loughlin and the McPeakes.

The Archives features the return performance of the American accordion player Joe Derrane when he made his comeback to the traditional music stage at the Wolf Trap Irish Festival in the USA in the early 1990's. There's also a fine feast of Donegal fiddling recorded in 1991.

The legendary accordion player Paddy O'Brien from Tipperary is the main focus of tonight's programme. We will hear the original audition recordings made by Paddy for Raidió Éireann in 1951. There's a recording made by Ciarán Mac Mathúna in Newtown, Co. Tipperary in 1959 with the Bridge Céilí Band and a tune played by Paddy and his father, Dinny. Paddy's daughter Eileen talks about the launch of her new book, the definitive collection of Paddy O' Brien's music.

Paddy talks about his youth, his father, his musical influences and his various recordings since the 1950's. This is the first in the summer series Ceili House - The Archives.

Tonight's Ceili House comes from Roscommon town where plans are well underway for this year's Connaught Fleadh Cheoil. Lots of local musicians and singers have gathered to play a few tunes, sing a couple of songs and prepare for the upcoming festivities.

Ceili House comes from Hartnett's Bar in Castleisland, Co. Kerry and features a host of local musicians and singers, including the legendary accordion player, Jimmy Doyle.

Programme 19: Saturday 23rd May 2009

Céilí House returns to Co. Kerry tonight where preparations are well underway for the upcoming World Bodhrán Championships in Miltown. Local musicians and singers gather in the Miltown Community Hall and among the performers is 2006 World Bodhrán champion, Neil Lyons. There's lots of great music and song and the festival takes place next weekend.

Tonight's programme comes from The Pier House in Skerries, Co. Dublin where preparations are under way for the Skerries Traditional Music Week-end which runs from the 15th - 17th of May.

On tonight's Céilí House we feature an excerpt from The Bloom of Youth series featuring the late Ciarán Ó Con Cheanainn who, sadly, passed away at a young age. He was the winner of the prestigious Corn Uí Riada sean nós singing competition at the 2008 Oireachtas na Gaeilge. We also remember the great Donegal fiddler James Byrne who died suddenly last November. James played on Ceili House on 5th April 2008 and we replay some of that programme tonight.

Céili House returns to the Dublin Institute of Technology Conservatory of Music and Drama in Rathmines in Dublin. The DIT Traditional music Ensemble makes the music and song with course director Ódhran Ó Casaide playing a beautiful air and telling us a little about musical activities in the college.

A St. Patrick's celebration live from the National Concert Hall, Dublin with Scottish singer Dick Gaughan, the music of Canon James Goodman played by Mick O' Brien (pipes,) Emer Mayock (flute) and Aoife O' Brien, performers from The Bloom of Youth; Michael King (flute)) and Darina Gleeson (songs). The Sligo All Stars featuring Oisín Mac Diarmada (fiddle), Philip Duffy (fiddle), Peter Horan (flute), Colm O'Donnell (flute/vocals), June McCormack (flute), Seán Carroll (button accordion), Seamie O'Dowd (guitar) and Kevin Brehony (piano)

Programme 10: Saturday 7th March 2009

This programme was recorded in the Seanchaí Kerry Literary & Cultural Centre which is on the Square in Listowel, Co Kerry. The focus was to mark the introduction of a scheme to collect and assemble an archive of the traditional music and song of North Kerry. A large group of local musicians and singers came together for the programme recorded under the guidance of Danny O'Mahony, a local accordion player who is involved with this archiving project. There was plenty of music and song as well as information about the local tradition of the North Kerry area.

The National Concert Hall in Dublin is the venue for tonight's Céilí House and the performers are from the Meitheal Orchestra who perform with, among others, fiddle player Zoe Conway.

Tonight's Céilí House is from the Teach Cheoil in Corofin, Co. Clare where preparations are underway for the upcoming annual Corofin Traditional music weekend in a couple of week's time. It's always a great night here in this Co. Clare venue.

Céilí House comes live from Cultúrlann na h-Éireann in Monkstown in Co. Dublin with the Echoes of Éireann tour group. They are heading for a tour of Britain next week and they include the current All-Ireland senior accordion champion Darren Breslin, Seán Ó Sé and a host of other outstanding musicians and singers.

Tonight is the second of two programmes from the exciting Céilí Band competition at the Ennis Trad. Fest, held last November in Co. Clare.

The Ennis Trad Fest was the venue for Ard Ghaisce na mBuíonta, a competition for senior ceili bands from around the country. There was big prize money and the competition was keen. Tonight on Céilí House, we feature part one of this wonderfully entertaining night from the West County Hotel.

On tonight's Céilí House we've another chance to hear the hugely entertaining and nostalgic programme, recorded at last year's Meitheal Summer School in Limerick city. The students recreated the sounds of the great Céilí bands of the past and we also hear from the school's director Gary Shannon.

Tonight Céilí House visits the annual house dance from the home of Antoin and Bernie Mac Gabhann in Baltrasna in Co. Meath. It's usually a high energy night with about 40 musicians and singers, all packed into the front room of the house and there's space kept for the dancers too. It's always a memorable start to the Céilí House year.
