Programme 44: 27th December 2008
A memorial programme for the celebrated Clare fiddle player Paddy Canny.
Paddy died on 27 June 2008 and was considered the father figure of fiddle playing in Co. Clare. He was a founding member of the legendary Tulla Ceili Band in the mid 1940's and made one of the first LP recordings of traditional music in the 1950's. He also made many broadcasts for RTÉ Radio over the years, and his final performance was on Ceili House in September 2007, when he played with his two grandchildren, Gerard and Emer. Tonight's programme features the music of Paddy Canny and an interview he did with Kieran Hanrahan, in his home in 2001. It was not previously broadcast.

Tonight's programme features Part 2 of the senior Ceili Band competition from the Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann. The Allow Ceili Band, from Cork will have it all to do as they look to defend their title against some stiff opposition.
Will it be two in a row or will there be a new name on the trophy? All will be revealed after some outstanding music on tonight's Ceili House.

'Fionnuar' were the winners of the Gael Linn/RTÉ Radio na Gaeltachta sponsored competition Siansa. The group get together in Fermoy, Co. Cork for this programme and they invite a couple of guests for a lively night on Céilí House.

Féile Frank McGann takes place in Strokestown, Co. Roscommon in October. Tonight's programme previews this annual event and features a host of musicians, singers and dancers from the county.

Another great sporting weekend is celebrated on Ceili House, on the eve of the All Ireland Football final. Kieran Hanrahan will be in Naomh Barróg GAA Club, Dubllin for the build up to the big match with music, song and dance.

Na Piobairi Uileann is the venue for tonight's Ceili House. There will be lots of fine playing from some of today's great exponents, young and old, of the art of Uileann Piping. There will be news too of the upcoming events at na Piobairi Uileann.

The music and song on tonight's Ceili House was recorded at the fleadh in Tullamore, featuring young and old from the various sessions and concerts during the week long celebration of the Irish traditional arts.

It's that time of year again and the programme travels on to
Tullamore, Co. Offaly where this year's Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann is in full swing. Ceili House broadcasts from the Gig Rig in the centre of the town and there's music and song from local and visiting musicians and singers. There'll also be some performances from some of the newly crowned All Ireland Champions.

Ceili House travels to Keoghans in Nobber, Co. Meath for a preview of this year's O'Carolan Harp festival. We've music and song from the Four Provinces Ceili Band, local group Coscan and a host of other local musicians and singers.

The sound of Ceili Bands from times past is recreated on tonight's Ceili House. The venue is St. Villiers School in Limerick and they host this year's Meitheal, a traditional music summer school with a difference. Gary Shannon, the school's director talks about the idea behind Meitheal and their students' upcoming performance with Zoe Conway at the National Concert Hall.

Tonight's Ceili House comes from the Sonic Arts Research centre in Queens University, Belfast and there's music and song from the Queens University Traditional Group in this most unusual venue.

St. Flannan's college in Ennis has a proud history in sport and music. Tonight we get a second chance to hear the programme, recorded there earlier this year. There's music and song from today's pupils and from some of the teaching staff and past pupils. This programme was first aired on March 22nd 2008.

Another chance to hear the wonderful Vincent Broderick and his family and a group of friends. They gathered in Studio in the RTE Radio centre to celebrate the launch of Vincent's new book of tunes and to celebrate the man himself. This programme was first broadcast on May 31st 2008.

Meath last November and among others features a wonderful performance from Feilim's brothers, McDara and Micheál and sisters Aine and Nóra. The programme was first transmitted on January 19th 2008.

On tonight's programme we feature part 1 of the Feilim O Raghallaigh Memorial Concert which was recorded at the Knightsbrook hotel in Trim Co. Meath, featuring the Kinsella family, the McHugh family, the Tain Ceili Band and a host of other fine musicians and singers. This programme was first broadcast on the 12th January 2008.

The Clarecastle Day Care Centre in Clarecastle, Co. Clare is the venue for tonight's Céilí House. The local branch of Comhaltas is preparing for the annual Cross Roads Céilí which takes place in the village from the 14th to 20th July. We've music and song from the Ryan Family, Josh O'Loughlin, Martin Quigley, Liam Woulfe, Caroline Doohan, Vincent Neylon, Karen Whelan, Niamh Whelan, Vincent Griffin, Therese McInerney, Kitty O' Donoghue, The Lynch Family, Emile Kirwin, and the Frawley family.

Tonight's Céilí House comes from Colfer's Pub in Carrick-on-Bannow in Co. Wexford. There's mouthorgan music from John and Pip Murphy, the local Céilí Band and there's news of the upcoming Phil Murphy Traditional Music Festival.

Tonight's Céilí House comes from Halla Inse Bán in Templeglantine, Co. Limerick. There's music and song from Teampeall a' Ghleanntáin CCÉ Céilí band, William and John Larkin, Patricia Wright, Catherine Broderick and Christine Wright. Also, Tadhg Ó Maolchathaigh traces the history of this renowned Comhaltas branch and the local traditions.

Tonight we pay tribute to flute player and composer Vincent Broderick. Vincent recently published another collection of his tunes called the Turoe Stone 2. Fiddler Antoin McGabhann and friends join Vincent and members of his family for tonight's celebration.

Tonight's Ceili House has an unusual mix of tunes and songs from the eclectic Waterford/Tipperary trad. group "Rattle the Boards" The group believes in enjoying the life and fun in the music and song. They've invited a couple of special guests, including John Kenny. The programme was recorded in The Local in Dungarvan, Co. Waterford.

The Log Cabin in Ballyduff, Co. Waterford is the venue for tonight's programme. We're close enough to the Cork and Tipperary borders and we meet a group from the area called the Booley House who recently released their debut CD.

A special gala concert of traditional music, song and dance to celebrate St. Patrick's weekend - live from the National Concert Hall in Dublin
Tonight's programme starts at the earlier time of 8pm
A special night on Ceili House as we have a three hour transmission from the National Concert Hall in Dublin, beginning at 8pm. There's the very best music, song and dance from The Clare All Stars ceili band, Paudie O Connor and friends from Sliabh Luachra, folk singer, June Tabor and, from last year's "Bloom of Youth" series on RTE Radio1, Cork sean nos singer Nell Ni Chroinin with Meath fiddler Conor McEvoy. There's also some outstanding Sean nos dancing.

Another group of third level students gather for tonight's Ceili House. They are the Trad. Ensemble from the Dublin Institute of Technology and they come from many different parts of the country.

The students of St. Patrick's Teacher Training College Traditional Music Society, Dublin, assemble at the college for tonight's Ceili House. Fiddle player Michael Harrison and accordion player Janine Redmond are amongst tonight's performers.

Ceili House travels to the Co. Clare village of Corofin for the launch of this year's Corofin Traditional music weekend which takes place on the last weekend in February into March. The programme comes Live from the "Teach Cheoil" in the town and features the Corofin Ceili Band and a host of local musicians and singers.

Tonight's programme features the Senior Ceili Band competition, held at the Ennis Trad. Festival, last November. There's a first prize of €5000 and the competition and the music is very keen.
