St. Patrick hit a rock in anger with his crosier and the waters of the Bann began to flow. Or was it the river goddess who, angry at a young man who had run away with his stepmother, flooded the Bann valley? Fionn Mac Cumhaill created Lough Neagh by throwing the piece of land that became the Isle of Mann after a fleeing giant. Or was it a magic well that was left opened for three hundred years and eventually buried a city of round towers that created the largest inland lake in Britain and Ireland? These are just two of the stories in this week's As The River Flows as Seán Rocks heads north to trace the course of the great water highway of Ulster that is the Bann. His journey takes him from the mountains of Mourne to the northern coast of the island. Bannbridge, Portadown and Coelraine are some of the stop-off points along the way.
Programme 2: 13th September
This week Seán Rocks sails from the upper reaches of Lough Corrib down to where the river Corrib enters the sea. Grace O'Malley, Alexander Nimmo and Rafteri an File are among the characters that feature along the way. In the company of local Corrib enthusiasts George, Phyllis and Adrian Ryder, Seán discovers the history, lore and myth of both lough and river from the Maam hotel all the way to Galway Bay.
Programme 1: 6th September 2005
Programme 1 follows the path of Ireland's second biggest river - the Barrow. Its source, an enchanted well on the heathery summit of Barna in the Slieve Bloom Mountains, will flood the plains below if stared into or disturbed in any way. Along its journey, the Barrow is met by its sisters the Nore and the Suir before making its way into the Atlantic at Waterford harbour.
Seán travels the length of the river and meets those who live along its banks and who know the weird and wonderful stories buried in its depths.
