    A tribute to the Nobel Laureate Doris Lessing

    With the voice of Doris Lessing through a 1999 “Imprint” interview with Theo Dorgan, and the analysis of writers Eilis Ni Dhuibhne and Anne Haverty, this week’s Arts Tonight pays tribute to the writer Doris Lessing, who died last month.

    From the publication of The Grass is Singing in 1960, through the Children of Violence sequence, novels like The Good Terrorist and The Fifth Child and a series of ‘space fiction’ novels, Lessing was constantly ploughing new ground, championing feminism and Marxism, later questioning and rejecting practically every ‘ism’ she had earlier embraced.


    Publishing more than 50 books, she influenced and inspired a generation of young writers. In paying tribute to her Margaret Atwood said that if there were a Mount Rushmore of 20th-century authors, Doris Lessing would most certainly be carved upon it.

    This programme can be enjoyed by Lessing fans and newcomers to her work and a reminder of what a huge contribution she made to literature.
