Tonight, to end our highlights series before the new season of Arts Tonight, a programme on German writer Heinrich Böll, author of the famous Irisches Tagebuch/ Irish Journal, which has attracted generations of German visitors to Ireland since its publication 56 years ago.We visit his cottage on Achill, now a writer's retreat, in the company of Achill born sculptor John McHugh who runs the annual festival on Achill in Böll's name, and poet John F Deane.
Gisela Holfter talks to Vincent about her new book, Heinrich Böll and Ireland.
Also on the programme, Moray McGowan of the TCD German department and Peter Jankovsky reading from the Irish Journal.
We end with John F Deane reading his poem, Heinrich Böll's Cottage.
Arts Tonight's new season begins next Monday. Our first two programmes of the new season will be panel discussions from the Dublin Theatre Festival, which opens this week. This Friday 27 October at the Project Arts Centre at 2pm, Vincent Woods and panel discuss 'Theatres of Politics': theatre's relationship with political and civic issues. Guests are Fiach MacConghaill of the Abbey Theatre, Joe Lawlor of Desperate Optimists whose play Tom and Vera is at the current festival; Marcus Youssef, artistic director of New World Theatre, which presents Winners and Losers at the festival; critic Helen Meany and Dublin Theatre Festival director Willie White.
