Electric Picnic Competition

Electric Picnic Competition

This Friday at exactly 11.59 am, entries will close for a very special design competition. The winning entries will feature at this year's Electric Picnic and the competition is to design and refurbish a unique vintage caravan.

This year is the eleventh year of Electric Picnic and the trailer park has been part of the event for the last two years. A feature of the festival is that the organisation of the main stage remains pretty much the same year to year, but the side events come and go, change and evolve.

Last year, there were about eleven trailers in the trailer park. One was a stage where there were performances – a trailer with the side peeled off atop two other trailers where the musicians performed in different rooms of the trailer. Another was a beach bar shack; another was a cafe celebrating camping where you could buy your coffee in a tin mug. Another was a circus area where the caravan was the changing room and performances happened on the reinforced roof.

This year, they have some money to give people who might have ideas about what they would like to do with a caravan – it could be a Movember caravan where men could get moustache advice in advance of Movember; it could be a caravan with a Perspex side used as an art gallery; it could be a bar; a theatre company could perform in the space ... there are lots of ideas.

The key is that the space isn’t for living in, it is for interacting with the public. The people with the trailer have to host the trailer over the three days of electric picnic.

To enter you just go to the electric picnic website and follow the links. Closing date for entries is Friday, 28 Feb, at 11.59 am and Electric Picnic is on from 29-31Aug 2014.

Opera at the Cinema

Over the coming months HD simulcasts will bring the work of great operatic composers into local cinemas all around the country. They’re aimed, amongst other things, at growing new audiences for opera.

Bernard Clarke of Lyric FM is in studio. We asked Bernard to tell us who, in his view are the great composers, who we should absolutely not miss and who, if you’re an opera newbie, is the best introduction to the form.
