Aoibhinn & Company with Rob and Marian Heffernan

Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin is joined each week by a guest who talks about their life, passions and influences, as well as choosing their favourite music.

This week, Aoibhinn interviews World Champion walker Rob Heffernan and his wife Marian, an athlete herself and also his coach.

Rob and Marian talk about the training routine for an international athlete and the coaches who have contributed to their development along the way. They talk about the impact of their baby due in January on Rob's schedule.

They are both athletes, but Marian has recently started to manage Rob's career. They discuss Rob's new found national profile, the kindness of people since his win and how the recent tweet controversy taught him about his new responsibilites as a national figure.

Rob and Marian tell Aoibhinn how they met through athletics.

Becoming a World Champion in the 50 kilometer event at this year's Championship in Moscow was a great achievement for Rob as medals have eluded him in his career thus far. They talk about how the day unfolded and the impact of the win.

The 2011 World Championships were in Korea and Rob describes how he got the news of his mother's death while he was at the event. Marian and Rob describe the journey home to attend his mother's funeral and Marian's decision to return to Korea to compete and qualify for the London Olympics. Rob describes his relationship with his late mother and the grief he has experienced since her death.

Rob and Marian talk about drugs in athletics, about their children's sporting success and about the home improvements they plan before the baby's arrival. Rob justifies the new Man Shed in the back garden where he can now go to rest during his heavy training.

Rob and Marian's chose Take That Rule the World; Luke Kelly A Song for Ireland; Somewhere over the Rainbow by Israle IZ Kamakawiwo'ole.
