A Nation Once Again
According to producer of the series, Peter Mooney, "A united Ireland has been an aspiration since the partition and foundation of the state in 1922. In recent months there has been talk about re-unification with a senior retired RUC officer saying he could foresee it in 15 years time and Sinn Féin proposing a motion in the Dáil on the issue. But after more than 80 years of separation what would be the problems of re-integrating the two parts of the country be?"
This series ignores any constitutional settlement and looks at the other implications of unity for the country North and South. How would the North's sluggish economy fit in with the Celtic Tiger South? How would the South's struggling health systems fit with the North's National Health care? Would the resources available to Northern schools become available nationally or would we equalise downward? Would we end up with the best or the worst of both worlds? These are just some of the issues the series will address."
