The political poetry and song of the Gaelic Jacobite tradition explained by the period's leading authority, Professor Breandán Ó Buachalla in his five part series.

Professor Breandán Ó Buachalla's groundbreaking work on the Gaelic political poetry of the 18th and 19th century is the basis for the new five-part Irish language radio series Aisling Ghéar.

Ó Buachalla examines poetry and song in Irish to demonstrate how traditional understandings of sovereignty and nationhood became part of a flexible Jacobite philosophy developed over two centuries in Ireland. Ó Buachall draws on the Aisling poetry tradition and the Gaelic song tradition to demonstrate several important themes in the history of political thought and ideas developed among the intellegentia and the common people.

Among the well-known songs examined in the five themed programmes are Mo Ghile Mear, Seán Ó Duibhir an Ghleanna, na Bearta Crua, Éamonn an Chnoic, Óró Sé do Bheatha Abhaile, I m'Aonair Seal and Ráiteachas na Tairingreacht.
