    About The Show

A Living Word is RTE Radio 1's longstanding two-minute daily meditation from Monday to Friday each week. As its early morning (6:40) and repeat late night (12:58) broadcast times suggest, the roots of the programme reach back to the traditions of Morning Prayer and Compline in Western Christianity; but today's transmissions range from the religious to the reflective along the whole spectrum of human spirituality.

    Contributions are always very welcome.

One week's output comprises five scripts in toto, each of which should average 250 words at most (cf. Wordcount on a PC toolbar). That’s because the pace of the piece will then be serious without being stately and feisty without being rapid-fire. The five individual pieces may be a free-standing choice of topics from day to day or, more often than not, a thematised suite with a unitary concern.

Personal and narrative material works very well here. The language of the five inputs should seek to be agile and vernacular (but without jargon), the tone companionable and even intimate. Don't forget that the microphone -the Ancient Greek for 'a small voice'- is the very opposite of the megaphone and that many of your auditors are half-naked or listening on headphones. You won’t have a prayer if you speak from a pulpit! Listen live or on the Website to editions of the programme as a good general guide.

Submissions for consideration should be sent to: The Producer, A Living Word, Arts and Features, Radio Centre, RTE, Donnybrook , Dublin 4 or to aidan.mathews@rte.ie. As an example of length and its look on the page, this text - from caption to close - is just a bit over 250 words or the normal duration of a single sample script.
