About the programme

A new 6 part series Presented by Rachael English and produced by Aonghus McAnally.

While the series is based around the figures in the 2006 census, the hope is that all of the programmes will put a human face on those figures. This is a series about all of us, about how we live our lives - and about how those lives have changed. It's also a story about re-population - despite the large rise in the number of people living here, the population still isn't back to its pre-famine level.

In the four years 2002-2006 the population of the state grew by 322,645 - bringing it to 4.2 million. This gave the country the fastest growing population in Europe. It's also one of the youngest populations in Europe.

About two thirds of the rise is accounted for by immigration - but even without immigration Ireland still has a fast-growing population.

The population has grown almost everywhere, but the growth has been most dramatic in the suburbs of Dublin and in the surrounding counties. And after 150 years in decline, the population of County Leitrim increased. One quarter of all the houses in county Meath were built between 2002 and 2006.

The series will look at aspects of Irish life like:

· Family,
· The Home,
· Work,
· Immigration
· Education,
· Religion,
· Disability
· Irish Language
· And the future which faces us all.
