Susan O' Flynn spotted a distinctive insect outside her backdoor in Balbriggan, Co. Dublin. It seemed very fond of her clemetis, and she had never seen one before, so she photographed it.
The picture is of a Giant Horntail. Although it looks rather scary, it is in fact harmless. The long ovipositor protruding from its end is not a sting. It is nature's version of a drill. The female drills with the ovipositor into wood and deposits her eggs.
