App Article - What Makes The World Go Round?
(By Matthew Jebb)

Is ivy good or bad?

For this week's MOONEY APP article, Matthew Jebb, Director of the National Botanic Gardens, writes about what makes the world go round: It is all too easy to forget how the world works; some people might be tempted to suggest that it’s money that makes the world go around. The Scottish botanist Sir Patrick Geddes (1854 – 1932) famously pointed out this error by remarking that it is “By leaves we live”. “This is a green world” he said “with animals comparatively few and small, and all dependent upon leaves. The world is a vast leaf colony, growing on and forming a leafy soil, not a mere mineral mass; and we live not by the jingling of coins, but by the fullness of our harvests.” Without green leaves nothing on earth would exist – leaves enable the world to work by capturing energy from the sun. Water Water Everywhere...

Water is a scarce resource and we’re wasting it. You might be surprised to hear me say water is a scarce resource given that two-thirds of the Earth’s surface is covered by water. And of course, when we talk about Ireland, we live in a country with an abundant rainfall. Environmentalist and TV Presenter (About The House; Eco Eye) Duncan Stewart is in studio with more....
