The Island Landscape

Nestwatch 2012: Barn Owls

Four eggs were laid by the female in the latter part of May, however only two of the eggs hatched, the first of which did so on approximately the 20th of June. As the weather has been so poor, breeding success of Barn Owls has been very low this summer, so two healthy chicks in this nest box is fantastic to see. Over the coming weeks, we hope that both chicks can continue to develop strongly so that they begin taking their first short flights around the end of the first week in August and eventually leave the nest to find a territory of their own.

Barn Owl

Expect to see some very exciting footage as they both morph from pot bellied and fluffy owlets into beautiful juveniles, you will see a lot of wing flapping, head bobbing and devouring of the food which will be delivered by the male and female and also undoubtedly hear lots of snoring which is their way of begging for food. The majority of the activity will occur from dawn until dusk. Click here to watch Nestwatch 2012!

Samba Mammas

Samba Mammas
Samba Mammas!

You might have thought that the sound of the Samba was exclusively Brazilian! But if you ever hear a samba drum being played at any parade in Ireland, it's roots can be traced back to this part of the country! The town recently played host to samba acts from all over the world at the 19th annual Drogheda Samba Festival. It could be argued that Samba is at the very heart of Drogheda - and who could have more "heart" than a group of Samba Mammas!? The Samba Mammas are live in Drogheda today, and Derek talks to Samba Mamma Kim Martin about the group... To find out more about the group, visit their Facebook page.

Mooney's Magic Moment

Mary Kingston awards Drogheda's Mooney's Magic Moment to Catrina Culligan! Catrina is the soul of Drogheda Youth Development.
She runs a drop in centre for disadvantaged children between 7 and 15 years of age, based in the old Carnegie Library in Drogheda. They are offered support and counselors plus a safe place to hang out and socialize where they are always welcomed. Catrina is a friend and inspiration to these young children who perhaps have not always had opportunites or an easy start in life.

Drogheda United

Dreams of getting into the Champions League are well and truly alive in Drogheda with the Claret and Blue army of Drogheda United! But you may remember in 2009 that Drogheda United were in severe financial difficulty and in danger of going completely bust. An examiner was appointed (Neil Hughes of Hughes Blake who was a regular financial advisor on Mooney). One of the driving forces behind that rescue was Thomas McConnon, who at the time was a first year college student doing pharmaceuticals. He was a lifelong fan, and wanted to do something for Drogheda United. Well he, along with a number of other supporters, is now on the Board of Directors of Drogheda United and what a success story they are having this season – second in the Premiere League! Thomas joins Derek today to describe how the club was saved and is prospering...
