On today's Mooney,
It only does 50kph and is technically a quadricycle ... motoring correspondent Michael Sheridan tells Derek about the car especially designed for 16 year olds. Karl Broderick has advice on writing a good Christmas song. Plus, we are looking for three players in Mooney's Monday Quiz!
The good news for the motorist in last week’s Budget was that there was no tax increases in petrol and diesel. But Road Tax and VRT will cost motorists more in 2013.
We’ll also see new registration plates next year. Michael Sheridan, Motoring Correspondent with www.rte.ie, is in studio to chat about all of these stories, plus the Pope's new popemobile, and Derek finds out about a car designed for 16-year-olds!
Department Of Finance On Motor Tax:
It was decided that an increase in motor tax rates was appropriate, mainly as a deficit-reduction measure.
• Increases are 7.5% for most categories of vehicle, with the exception of private vehicles in CO2 bands A to G where the following increases apply:
||Emissions g CO2/km
||Actual % increase
• The measures will take effect from midnight on 5 December 2012 in respect of vehicle licences commencing on or after 1 January 2013.
The measure is estimated to yield €86.5m in a full year. The increased revenue will be paid into the Exchequer rather than to the Local Government Fund.
Aixam Coupe S
This is already available in Spain, Portugal and France and it will launch in Britain early in the new year.
The Aixam Coupe S looks like a small compact car but it’s marketed as a “light quadricycle”. It can be driven with a moped licence and it does no more than 28 mph.
It was on show in Birmingham recently, and Derek spoke to Justin Bond, the UK Manager of Aixam Mega ltd, the French company who manufactures the vehicle...
What Makes The Perfect Christmas Song?
Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley, Judy Garland, Mariah Carey, The Pogues and Kirsty McColl ...their songs resonant the airwaves at this time of year.
We reckon that anybody who can come up with the magical formula that comes up with a hit Christmas song are made for life.
So we have decided that we are going to write our own Christmas song, here on Mooney! But how - what does make the perfect Christmas song? Joining Derek in studio to explain is our producer Olan McGowan and song writer, script writer, and producer Karl Broderick.
'Fairytale Of New York' is frequently voted as the Best Christmas Song in annual polls
