Coffee Morning For Hospice Care
Thursday, September 20th 2012
Alan Hughes, Louis Walsh and our own Derek Mooney at the launch of Ireland's Biggest Coffee Morning!
This morning, Derek joined Louis Walsh, Alan Hughes and the many thousands of people across Ireland supporting their local hospice service, by having a cup of coffee at Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services, Harold’s Cross. Ireland’s Biggest Coffee Morning, proudly sponsored by Bewley’s, is an all-island fundraising event which raises vital funds for local hospice care services all over Ireland.
Over the past two decades, people have consumed 15 million cups of Bewley’s coffee on Ireland’s Biggest Coffee Morning and raised an estimated €30 million for hospice care. People in workplaces, homes and local organisations will hold coffee mornings and collect €2 for each cup of Bewley’s fresh ground coffee consumed.
The target for 2012 is to raise €2 million – that’s over 1 million cups of Bewley’s coffee. All money raised locally stays locally and goes directly back to fund local Hospice care services.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Ireland's biggest coffee morning, and local fundraising for hospice services is now more important than ever before. Hospice care, like other areas of the health service, has been affected by cutbacks and local fundraising is essential to ensure that vital hospice services are maintained.
Hospice or palliative care involves the total care of patients and their families at the stage in a serious illness, where the focus has switched from treatment aimed at cure to ensuring quality of life. Almost 30,000 people die annually in Ireland and over 6,000 people use hospice services every year. It is estimated that up to 13,000 patients will require access to hospice and specialist palliative care in 2016.
