NEIL HUGHES - BANK CHARGES - AND HOW TO AVOID THEM
What bank charges do we absolutely have to pay, what can we minimise and what can we avoid altogether?

Banking is a service like any other and like any other service if you are not careful you can be fleeced if you don't know the facts.

The advice for the consumer breaks down into:
Be aware of what you are being charged and then shop around.

How can we reduce our bank charges?
The first and most important thing is to avoid using an overdraft facility if you can help it. Banks charge for setting one up, they charge interest on it if you use it, and impose a surcharge if you exceed your limit. And there are other charges such as "referral item fees" which get imposed when you go over your limit.

Never allow one of your cheques to bounce. Banks call this "returned unpaid" and impose hefty charges if your cheque or direct debit has to be returned unpaid.

Consider using a credit card to pay your bills. If you settle your credit card balance in full every month, this won't cost you anything bar the annual fee.

Using internet and telephone banking gets rid of cheque costs and other bank charges. You make payments and transfers between accounts over the telephone or over the internet by using a secure password. Bank of Ireland compares the cost of writing a cheque and making an online payment.

Banks, such as AIB and BOI, will not charge you transactions charges if you use internet banking and a debit (laser) card once a quarter or once a month.
