Message from
the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands,
Síle de Valera TD.
I am
very pleased to be associated with the recording of the 'dawn
chorus', an event which has captured the imagination of the
nation.
Over
400 bird species have been noted in Ireland, about half of which
regularly arrive as residents, summer visitors, winter visitors and
passage migrants.
In
an international context Ireland is most important for its breeding
seabird colonies and its concentrations of wintering waterfowl such
as ducks, geese, swans, waders, etc. from breeding grounds to the
north. A number of other species are particularly important, e.g.
Peregrines, Corncrakes and Choughs.
Dúchas - the heritage service of my Department is
responsible for the protection of Irish birds and their habitats,
which are looked after by a corps of Conservation Rangers, who
provide a vital service for the protection of our
wildlife.
Síle de Valera TD,
Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the
Islands |
