Thefts from shops are not uniformly distributed within society; some shops are targeted more than others, while specific products seem to be stolen more frequently than others. In 1970′s Ireland, the most popular items to shoplift were tartan skirts and tins of salmon!

Results have shown that pilferage can be done by people from all backgrounds -there is no ‘type’. The types of shoplifters can vary from habitual offenders and professional shoplifters to senior citizens and middle-class people with good jobs.
