My Tunes: Aedín Gormley invites a guest to select, listen to and discuss a number of music pieces that hold a special meaning for them.
In this programme her guest is the award winning American jazz vocalist and composer Kurt Elling.
Elling is a baritone with a four-octave range, and a writer and performer of vocalese, the art of writing and performing words over improvised jazz solos. He first became interested in music through his father, who was Kapellmeister at a Lutheran church.
Growing up, Elling sang in the classical style, learning counterpoint from the motets of Johann Sebastian Bach. He began playing jazz gigs once a week during graduate school, “By day I was reading Kant and Schleiermacher, trying to get a handle on that, and at night I was sitting in clubs”.
He started his recording career with the Blue Note label, where his debut album was nominated for a Grammy. He will be performing with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra in their Signature Series at the NCH in Dublin in May.
