The Russians are coming

When Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony was first performed in the US in 1890, the New York Post reviewer considered it 'one of the most thoroughly Russian, i.e. semi-barbaric, compositions ever heard in the city... If Tchaikovsky had called his symphony "A Sleigh Ride Through Siberia" no one would have found this title inappropriate.' A German reviewer a few years later wasn't much kinder, writing 'The composer's twaddle disturbed my mood. The confusion in brass and the abuse of the kettledrums drove me away!' However, this thrilling symphony went on to become one of the favourites of the late 19th century. Dmitri Jurowski of the famous musical dynasty makes his début with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in a programme also featuring Shostakovich and Fennessy, Fri 5 Feb, NCH.

A salute from Sutherland

Acclaimed Irish soprano Orla Boylan joins the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra for Richard Strauss' radiant Four Last Songs. In 1995 she won the first Veronica Dunne International Singing Competition, for which she had performed one of these songs. She was standing on the stage next to the legendary Australian singer Joan Sutherland, who said to her, 'Oh, marvellous breath control - how do you manage it?' She remembers the impact that made on her as a young singer in her early twenties. Read the Irish Times article. Book for the concert. Friday 5 March, NCH.
