with Soundings Showcase: Inspired by Shostakovich! with members of the RTE NSO plus the Blow the Dust Off Your Trumpet Orchestra | 7pm, FREE

BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 8 in F, Op. 93 [26']
SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No. 7 in C, Op. 60 'Leningrad' [69']

Andrew Litton conductor

Two masters of the symphony with the shortest and the longest of each. Beethoven, all bluff humour, poking fun at tradition; Shostakovich, smashing tradition, massively extending things and holding up a mirror to the terrifying Nazi invasion. White heat at work in both of them: all light and shade in Beethoven, all shadow looking for the light in Shostakovich. An exciting night.
