A Russian Jew who fled the Revolution, Dimitri Tiomkin ended up creating the sound of the most iconic and quintessentially American Westerns. In a career that spanned over six decades and produced some of the most unforgettable film scores of our time, he picked up 22 Academy Award nominations, winning four Oscars and an array of Golden Globes. The RTÉ Concert Orchestra celebrates a Hollywood master, under LA film and pops conductor Richard Kaufman and with Tiomkin's widow, Olivia, as guest of honour.
Tiomkin created the sound that came to define the Western genre: High Noon, Giant, The Alamo and on TV Rawhide - all are his scores, and all instantly evocative of a time, place and atmosphere. Many musical touches that now sum up that Western style started off in his scores - a solitary trumpet, the toll of a bell or horses' hooves conjured up in the strings. In fact his music for High Noon, as well as being a classic score itself, actually changed the way Hollywood movies were scored. The title ballad, 'Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darlin'', which was used as a refrain throughout the action, sparked a theme song craze that eventually led to the pop-oriented soundtracks of many of today's films.
Tiomkin wasn't limited to Westerns, though, he also wrote the soundtracks ranging from It's a Wonderful Life to Dial M for Murder, from The Old Man and the Sea to The Guns of Navarone, all featuring in this celebration. The RTÉ Concert Orchestra is known for its vibrant and stylish performances of film music, so this tribute to a master promises to be a very special evening.
