Mozart Piano Concerto No. 19 in F major, K. 459
Dvorák Symphony No. 9 'From the New World'
Mozart is one of the specialties of the outstandingly talented Canadian pianist Louis Lortie. A prize-winner at the 1984 Leeds International Competition, he has been blazing a trail ever since.
Janácek's vivid Taras Bulba was written at white heat, while in the 'New World' Symphony his countryman, Dvorák, looks back at his sojourn in America in music based on traditional themes. The celebrated 2nd movement with its exquisite cor anglais solo is hauntingly beautiful. Heard in a brass band arrangement in the old Hovis ads, heard as the melody for 'Goin' Home', and now heard as the composer intended.
