Last year's The Music of Shaun Davey with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra was lauded as one of the highlights of 2006's musical calendar. This year's concert promises nothing less with rare and unmissable performances of the powerful and spectacular pieces Granuaile and The Siege of Derry Symphony.

Proclaimed by critics as 'truly wondrous and exciting' (Belfast Newsletter), 'wild and magnificent' (The Observer) and 'astonishingly beautiful' (Staten Island Advance), this - the original Granuaile song cycle first performed in 1985 - tells the turbulent story of the 16th century Irish seafaring chieftain, Grace O'Malley. Over and above the fusion of classical and traditional musicians that comprises this lyrical and evocative score, soars the pure voice of Rita Connolly in a song cycle of love, loss and defiance which includes the popular classic 'Ripples in the Rockpools'.

This spectacular historical tone is matched by the The Relief of Derry Symphony, a work commissioned in 1990 by Derry City Council as part of the Northern Ireland Peace Process, and which powerfully commemorates - with soloists, pipers and extra trumpets - the famous siege of 1689, completing the programme for this exciting event.
