RTÉ Orchestras, Quartet and Choirs Music Commissions

MUSIC COMMISSIONS
We are interested in hearing from composers of proven ability and track record who have the capability to respond to the challenges involved in meeting exacting criteria and creating a high quality work of originality within agreed timelines. The aim is to have commissioned works selected through this process scheduled for performance by the RTÉ Orchestras, Quartet and Choirs.

In 2012 we are particularly interested in receiving commission proposals for original works for RTÉ Cór na nÓg with or without accompaniment. Composers are asked to bear in mind the likely audience which a new work could reach in public performance and/or radio broadcast.

GUIDELINES

- Composers should be Irish or Irish-based

- Composers should make one application only through this process

- Financial arrangements are subject to discussion but an indication by the applicant composer of the likely cost of the commission should be included along with a clear indication of scale; composers are asked to be mindful of the make-up of RTÉ's Orchestras, Quartet and Choirs. Funding in this scheme will not exceed €25,000 in total and it is expected that a number of works will be commissioned within it. Compositions already completed will not be supported through this process

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

- Artistic merit

- The quality and scale of the idea

- The overall ambition

- originality and competency demonstrated in the proposal

- Proven track record in acoustic composition

- Feasibility, for example, the ability to deliver the commission scored appropriately for the chosen ensemble within the proposed budget and within the proposed timeline

HOW TO APPLY

Applications should be submitted in hard copy and must include:

- A covering letter and CV of the composer

- A description of the work seeking commission

- Appropriate support material: samples of the composers' work including sound/video recordings with full information of tracks, performers, instrumentation etc. Scores of previous compositions

- Proposed commissioning fee and a timeline for completion along with an indication about how you might assist us with the promotion of the premiere

THE ASSESSMENT PROCESS

An assessment panel will be set up to review applications. It will include representatives from the RTÉ Orchestras, Quartet and Choirs, RTÉ lyric fm and at least one non-RTÉ expert in the field of new music.

The application window opens on August 13th 2012 and closes at 5pm on Friday 5th October 2012.

All applications should be forwarded to:

The Commissions Co-ordinator
RTÉ Orchestras, Quartet and Choirs,
RTÉ, Donnybrook
Dublin 4

Notification of the confirmation of receipt of applications will follow.

It is hoped that the assessment review group will make their decisions in early November 2012 and that notification of decisions will be announced subsequently.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU RECEIVE A COMMISSION?

You will be informed in writing after which discussions will commence and a contract will issue and include an agreed timeline to completion. It is hoped that commissioned works will be scheduled for public performance.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU ARE UNSUCCESSFUL?

You will be informed in writing and negotiations or discussions will not be entered into. Eligibility and compliance with application procedures alone will not guarantee a commission.
