RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra 2013-2014 Season

RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and Swedish virtuoso trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger to perform in Limerick, Waterford and Dublin in March

The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra proudly presents Swedish virtuoso trumpet player Håkan Hardenberger as both soloist/director and conductor in Limerick, Waterford and Dublin in March (Wednesday 12 - Friday 14 March) in a programme ranging from 18th century Haydn through to Joni Mitchell.

Hardenberger has been described as 'the best trumpet player in the galaxy' (The Times, London) and a 'colossus of the trumpet [with a] fabulously velvet tone' (The Guardian). Acclaimed for his phenomenal performances of the classical repertory and lauded as a pioneer of cutting-edge new trumpet works, he will lead a programme ranging from Haydn's popular trumpet concerto in E flat through to 'Both Sides Now' by Joni Mitchell.

With these he will conduct Prokofiev's 'Classical' symphony, an exhilarating homage to Haydn and Mozart and Ravel's Le tombeau de Couperin, an elegant and elegiac tribute to friends killed in battle. Two modern marvels bring the programme up to date: Planel's tuneful and atmospheric Concerto for Trumpet and String Orchestra and 'Both Sides Now', Joni Mitchell's anthemic love song in a mellow and moody new arrangement for trumpet and string orchestra by Roland Pöntinen.

Hardenberger performs with stellar artists worldwide including the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony and Vienna Philharmonic orchestras, Pierre Boulez, Alan Gilbert, Daniel Harding and Paavo Järvi. A prolific recording artist, his extensive discography on the Philips, EMI, Deutsche Grammophon and BIS labels includes his latest recording with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields with new arrangements of popular film and pop melodies (BIS), a new Gruber and Schwertsik disc with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra (BIS) and his trumpet concerto CD with the Gothenburg Symphony (DG).

This season, conducting is an integral part of Håkan Hardenberger's music making. In addition to his work with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, he will conduct orchestras including the St Paul Chamber Orchestra, Dresden Philharmonic, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Real Filharmonia Galicia, Tampere Philharmonic and the Malmö Symphony.
