Sean O'Mahony singing O Sole Mio in Limerick
In celebration of the first The Three Sopranos Summer Gala tour, each concert will feature a John Murray Show listener, selected through the programme's 'Sing with the Sopranos Search', singing the popular Neapolitan song O Sole Mio on stage with the three sopranos and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra. Garda Sean O'Mahony, originally from Kildimo in Co Limerick and now living in Athy, Co Kildare is one of the four RTÉ Radio 1 listeners selected through the John Murray Show programme. Each of the four singers is being coached in advance by one or more of the singers and all four recently joined the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and the three sopranos at the National Concert Hall for their first rehearsal.
Sean is being coached by Regina Nathan, the acclaimed soprano whose career in opera, concert and recital has taken her from her native Ireland across Europe, and as far as Kuala Lumpur and New York's Carnegie Hall and who is now living near Ennis. Sean, who has been based in Athy for the past four years, was put forward for the 'Sing with the Sopranos Search' by his wife Marie, who is from Athy. For Sean, the chance to sing in Limerick will be a 'coming home'. Stating himself to be 'Limerick by birth but Munster by the grace of God', over the years he has maintained strong connections with Kildimo and Limerick. He returns to Limerick frequently from Athy where he lives with Marie and his 4 year old son, seeing it as 'a fantastic city to socialise and live in.' Sean is a keen triathlete and a member of the newly formed ATHY Triclub which is a club for all aspiring triathletes in the area. He is currently training for Tri Athy on 1 June. He is also manages his local Intermediate hurling team in St Laurence's in Kildare. Sean says that he 'would sing anywhere at the drop of a hat'. More used to Garth Brooks and Christy Moore songs than Neopolitan songs like O Sole Mio he describes himself as 'delighted' at being selected and 'very interested' to hear what the three sopranos will have to say about his voice.
