Waterfront Fanfares

Note by the composer
Waterfront Fanfares is a short work which was written to open officially the Waterfront Hall in Belfast on 17 January 1997 under conductor Jerzy Maksymiuk.

Using only the brass, woodwind and percussion sections of the orchestra, it is an 'occasional' piece and develops entirely from the opening brass fanfares. It is flashy, and eventually fast-moving, and reflected the energy which I thought the new hall would generate for the arts in the city of Belfast.

I dedicated the piece to Michael Henson who at that time was the dynamic Chief Executive of the Ulster Orchestra and who had been particularly supportive of my music. He's now CEO of the Minnesota Symphony Orchestra.
