RTÉ Cór na nÓg audition and general information for 2014 applications.
Choral Director: Mary Amond O'Brien
Choral Assistant: Devon MacGillivray
Pianist: Alison Thomas
RTÉ Cór na nÓg was founded by Colin Mawby in 1987 and consists of over 60 children aged 10 upwards, from all parts of Dublin and surrounding counties. As well as providing excellent musical training, there is a strong emphasis on the enjoyment of music-making as well as the hard work and commitment required. Their unique relationship with RTÉ leads to varied and exciting performance opportunities with regular broadcasts on national radio and television, and collaborations with artists of the highest calibre.
In recent years the choir has sung for RTÉ lyric fm, RTÉ Radio 1, the Late Late Toy Show, Mass on Sunday and Fair City , performing with artists such as Andrè Rieu and the Three Tenors Ireland in the National Concert Hall, the O2 Arena, St Patrick's Cathedral and Áras an Uachtarain. Engagements in 2012/13 included performances of the acclaimed Ballymun Lullaby in Cork and Dublin with a combined choir of over 200 children from Cork and Dublin and a guest spot with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra in a special concert to launch the new RTÉ lyric fm CD, Choirs for Christmas. Their annual Christmas Concert in St Ann's Church Dawson St, and the lively St Patrick's Day event were great fun as ever!
Recordings include Gerard Victory's Ultima Rerum, the highly praised CD/video Faith of Our Fathers, a CD of Christmas music produced for RTÉ lyric fm and the RTÉ Guide and the newly released Choirs for Christmas CD for RTÉ lyric fm.
RTÉ Cór na nÓg rehearse in RTÉ during term times on Wednesday evenings from 5.30pm to 7pm and Saturday mornings 10am to 12 noon. Children are expected to regularly attend both so please don't proceed any further with your application if you think this level of comittment would be a problem. We recognise that this is a big commitment for all the family, but the experience is a hugely valuable and enjoyable one with many of our members going on to make music a central part of their lives.
Auditions for the new September intake are usually held in the RTÉ Radio Centre, Donnybrook, Dublin 4 in early March, with dates advertised on radio and throughout schools. For the audition, your child will be asked to prepare a short, set piece which they can learn via the web link provided, and will also be given ear and range tests. No other piece of music is required and the audition will take around 10 minutes. If successful, they are required to take part in a Training Choir course held over six Saturday mornings during the spring, and children for the September intake of RTÉ Cór na nÓg are chosen from this group. Please note that membership of the Training Choir does not automatically guarantee a place in RTÉ Cór na nóg.
We do not audition at other times during the year.
