Liz on 'the music'
Perhaps fans of TV tough guy Bear Grylls would disagree, but for me, adventure has always been something of the mind. Travelling through the realm of the imagination is the gift of music: and I think it's particularly exciting when there's a story involved. In Sonic Spectacular there are so many tales and fantasies to enjoy. The vibrant chaos conveyed by Berlioz in his Roman Carnival, the aching passion and loss of Khachaturian's Spartacus, and- a personal favourite- Delius, and his ravishing On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring. Among the international fare, it's a pleasure to hear the music of John Larchet, one of Ireland's great composers. By the Waters of Moyle is a gorgeous tone poem evoking the sorrow of Fionnuala and her brothers, enchanted swans bound by storm and dark. And finally- I mean, come on! Who doesn't want to hear the redoubtable brass section of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra giving socks to John Williams' martial theme from The Empire Strikes Back? I can feel the ground shaking already...Summer is a time for dreams and adventure- Sonic Spectacular offers both, in an evening of glorious masterworks. See you there! Full programme below.
