Opera's most glittering vocal and orchestral gems promise to sparkle with even greater lustre in summer sunshine, the Overture to Rossini's comic masterpiece The Barber of Seville and Gounod's hypnotic Jewel Song framing an afternoon of high emotions (Mozart's yearning Porgi amor, Charpentier's heartfelt Depuis le jour), forceful drama (resplendent marches by Berlioz and Mendelssohn), with just a hint of autumn encroaching in Richard Strauss's haunting September and tempestuous Cäcilie.
