A FINALE OF FANFAES AND FIREWORKS
ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
TWO OF THE MOST POPULAR AND EXCITING WORKS IN THE REPERTOIRE BRING OUR SEASON TO A GLORIOUS END. With its big, bold, heart-on-sleeve melodies, Tchaikovsky's tempestuous tug of war between orchestra and soloist offers pianist Kirill Gerstein opportunities aplenty for displays of firework virtuosity. No less powerful is Shostakovich's mighty Fifth Symphony, a dramatic 20th-century masterpiece brimming over with one memorable melody after another that gets close to boiling point with its bold intensity and striking contrasts.
