FROM SCOTTISH HERO TO GYPSY HEROINE
Two 19th-century giants offer glorious proof of the vigour and vitality of French orchestral music.
Packed with colour and character, Berlioz's Rob Roy is an evocative setting of Walter Scott's heroic novel, with his translucently beautiful Les nuits d'été (sung by the young Irish mezzo-soprano Mairé Flavin) altogether entrancing.
The 17-year-old Bizet's Symphony in C is shot through with youthful energy and excitement, his First Carmen Suite an exhilarating concoction depicting the misadventures of the most famous Gypsy in opera.
