POETRY AND FIREWORKS
Supreme examples of 19th-century music at its most expressive promise poetry and fireworks aplenty in Brahms' stately and serene re-working of Haydn, the seductive dreaminess of Schumann at his most rapturous and lyrical, Chopin's masterly mix of ornate melodies and combustible pianism (courtesy of young Irishman Neil Cooney), and Saint-Saëns' fiery portrait of the Devil as a possessed fiddler. Tchaikovsky's dazzling Third Suite moves from elegiac wistfulness to an exuberant set of variations with pyrotechnical brilliance.
