BRAHMS A German Requiem, Op. 45 [68']

Gautier Capuçon cello
Mhairi Lawson soprano
Benedict Nelson baritone
RTÉ Philharmonic Choir (chorus master Jeremy Haneman)
Paul McCreesh conductor

'A real large work, and I think good and alive,' said Elgar. One designed for the noble and rich sound of the cello, this concerto's autumnal character is haunting, often passionately poignant. Gautier Capuçon is ready for the challenge. So too is acclaimed scholar and conductor Paul McCreesh. What to make of a Requiem to comfort the living, not one for the souls of the dead - an unorthodox, visionary work. But a masterpiece.
